Alternative Investment Fund  (AIF) means any fund established or incorporated in India which is a privately pooled investment vehicle and collects funds from sophisticated investors, whether Indian or foreign, for investing it in accordance with a defined investment policy for the benefit of its investors

Types of AIFs in India

AIF Regulations have outlined different categories of funds with the intent to distinguish the investment conditions, restrictions, concessions available to each of them. All AIFs are required to mandatorily seek registration in one of the categories mentioned in the table below.

Types of AIFs in India

SEBI registered AIFs have shown significant growth in the recent past. As at 25 April 2018, there were 399 AIFs registered with SEBI:

During the 12-month period ended 30 December 2017, we have seen a 116% growth in funds across the three AIF categories, with the largest growth coming from the Category II and III AIFs which recorded annual growth rates of 105% and 186% respectively.
